Attacks on journalists, intimidating lawsuits, the concentration of media ownership, and the influence of digital platforms are undermining editorial independence in Europe. In the first half of 2026, 736 incidents involving 1,174 journalists and other media professionals were documented across EU member states and candidate countries.
